Second Inquest Into Yousef Makki

by Watson Woodhouse

On the 16th of October, the fresh inquest into the death of Yousef Makki, aged only 17, who died as a result of a fatal stab wound to his chest in Hale Barns, in March 2019 started.

The fresh inquest comes after success in the High Court where Lady Justice Macur and Mr Justice Fordham found that the Senior Coroner’s conclusion in the first inquest was ‘Wednesbury’ unreasonable. In doing so, the High Court agreed with the family’s submissions that the Senior Coroner had failed to properly consider all the evidence available before she returned a narrative conclusion stating that the ‘precise circumstances could not be ascertained’.

Former Senior Coroner Mr Geraint Williams, who now sits as the Coroner in the fresh inquest, has made it clear that the single root issue to be determined is that of whether Joshua Molnar acted in self-defence.

The inquest has now concluded.
