Police Interview MythBusters
It’s no secret that most police officers prefer individuals in attendance for interviews to be unaccompanied. Without representation, you’re vulnerable to certain lines of question and techniques that perhaps wouldn’t be used in front of a solicitor.
Some common myths used by police to deter you from receiving representation include:
“If you want a solicitor this is going to take a lot longer, don’t you want to be out of here soon?”
NOT TRUE: Watson Woodhouse criminal defence specialists have solicitors in every one of our 6 offices. We’ll receive a call usually a few hours before police officers are ready for an interview. Upon receipt of a second call stating the police are ready to interview, we are fully prepared and will be present within 20 minutes. You can call us in advance and we’ll be waiting when you arrive.
“Only guilty people need solicitors, I’ve got nothing to hide, I don’t need a solicitor”
NOT TRUE: The majority of people we represent are innocent, and finding the idea of being summoned to the police station is daunting. Interview processes can prove intimidating. Having a solicitor by your side helps greatly with the legal aspects whilst providing comfort and reassurance. Prior to the interview, we receive full disclosure from officers. This gives us an idea of the evidence they have and a head start. Without a solicitor, you would not have access to this.
“It’s 4oclock in the morning, I don’t want to be a pain and wake somebody up”
NOT TRUE: Watson Woodhouse has a 24-hour helpline specifically for this reason. We attend stations at all hours of the night and day because it’s our job. We are passionate about the right to independent legal advice, no matter the time.
