Two cyclists were involved in a crash that left one of the riders with serious head injuries.

The two cyclists were both riding mountain bikes and were travelling along Lodge Road toward Portswood Road in Southampton, when the accident took place at 7.30pm on 24 June 2008.

The cyclists were riding in single file when the accident happened. As they were approaching a pedestrian crossing at the junction of Earls Road, the rider in front slowed down and the following rider went into the back of him. He came off his bike and suffered serious injuries to his chest.

The 22-year-old male cyclist who was in front was uninjured ion the collision. The injured cyclist, a 41-year-old man from Southampton was rushed to Southampton General Hospital after paramedics treat him at the scene, where he remains in a serious but stable condition.

The road was then closed for several hours after the accident to allow police officers to conduct a full investigation into the cycle accident and to recover the bicycles.

Conducting the investigation, Sergeant Simon Brooks, is asking for any witnesses to the incident to come forward.
