Kirklevington Detention Centre and Operation Magnolia
Kirklevington Detention Centre was a youth detention centre in North Yorkshire for boys aged 14 to 17. Cleveland police, in an investigation called Operation Magnolia, are looking into a large number of allegations of physical and sexual abuse by youngsters against staff at Kirklevington.
The historical abuse, by various members of Kirklevington staff, started in the 1960s and continued into the 1990s and affected many boys serving short sentences at the detention centre.
If you were at Kirklevington and you have not yet reported the abuse you experienced to the police, it is not too late to do so.
Our child abuse compensation solicitors can also talk you through your options for applying for compensation. You do not need to wait until the outcome of your police complaint to call us. We are here to help you now.
Kirklevington Detention Centre Claims
Some of the men, who were youngsters when detained at Kirklevington Detention Centre, have expressed concerns about making a compensation claim for a variety of reasons, including:
- The abuse took place a long time ago – that does not prevent you from claiming historic child abuse.
- The claim will be against the staff member – claims are made against the Ministry of Justice as the Home Office operated the detention centre and they were responsible for their staff.
- They were a young offender – the fact that as a young person you were sent to Kirklevington by the justice system is irrelevant. You should not have been abused by the staff responsible for caring for you.
- They went on to commit additional offences – whatever the nature or length of your record, you should not have been abused whilst you were a child at Kirklevington and you have a right to have your compensation claim investigated.
