A man was left in a coma and fighting for his life following an attack that happened on Station Road, Billingham in the early hours of Saturday morning.

The victim, who has not yet been named, was punched to the ground after both he and the two women who were with him got into a row with a group of men who had left the Trader Jack’s nightclub. He was taken to the University Hospital of North Tees where he was stabilised before being transferred to the James Cook University Hospital where he remains in a coma.

Police said that the 22 year old man had suffered serious head injuries and described his condition as “critical but stable”. The incident happened at around 1.45am and police are appealing for anyone who has any information to contact them on 01642 326326.

Residents claim that at times the street where the assault took place is a no-go area with people leaving local pubs meeting with those leaving the nightclub. Trouble often starts as people are standing around waiting for taxis.

Four Teesside men aged between 18 and 19 years old were arrested. Three of the men were bailed and the fourth is due to appear in Court today charged with causing grievous bodily harm.
