IPP Prisoners
Home /Prison Law / IPP Prisoners
Indeterminate Sentences for Public Protection (IPP) were introduced in 2005 as a measure to protect the public from offenders considered to pose a significant risk of serious harm.
While the IPP sentences were abolished in 2012, many prisoners remain behind bars under IPP sentences, often long beyond their original tariff. IPP prisoners remain on a life licence, which means there is a higher chance of being recalled.
At Watson Woodhouse, we understand the complexities and challenges faced by IPP prisoners and their families.
What are the steps involved in progressing an IPP sentence?
Progressing through an IPP sentence often involves participating in rehabilitation programs, completing relevant courses and maintaining good behaviour.
We work with you to ensure these requirements are met and that you are in the best possible position to secure your release.
How Can Watson Woodhouse Help?
- Parole Board Representation
Our team can represent you or your loved one before the Parole Board, ensuring that your case is presented effectively, and all relevant evidence is considered.
- Sentence Progression Support
We work closely with prisoners to ensure they are meeting the requirements for sentence progression, whether that’s through attending rehabilitation programs, maintaining good behaviour, or addressing any psychological concerns. This is crucial for demonstrating to the Parole Board that release is appropriate.
- Post-Release Support
Once an IPP prisoner is released, they are subject to strict license conditions. We offer advice and assistance to help ensure compliance with these conditions and support in navigating any issues that may arise after release.
- Judicial Review and Appeals
If there has been an unlawful delay in the progression of an IPP sentence or if the parole decision seems unreasonable, our team can explore the option of appealing or judicially reviewing the decision to push for a fairer outcome.
Do I Have to Pay for Legal Representation?
Legal Aid is available for us to represent you providing you meet the eligibility requirements.
