What is Overturning a Conviction?
Overturning a conviction is when the court changes the verdict on a criminal conviction or sentence. Once overturned, it will be removed from the criminal record of that individual. If you are a postmaster (or represent the Estate of a postmaster) who was accused of an offence forming part of the Horizon scandal, you should contact Denise Jackman in our Crime team to seek advice on options to overturn the conviction.
Do I have to Pay for Legal Representation?
If you wish to overturn a conviction, legal aid funding may be available, but we would need to discuss the situation to ascertain the circumstances and potential of being successful.

Notable Cases
Watson Woodhouse has previously overturned a subpostmaster’s wrongful conviction. Solicitor Denise Jackmans’ fight for justice on behalf of her former client Peter featured in BBC One’s ‘Northern Justice’ programme.
Peter was a former police officer and subpostmaster accused of stealing £46,000 from the Post Office. However, it turned out Peter was part of one of the worst miscarriages of justice in modern British history.
Denise helped keep Peter out of prison, and after his death, his wife and Denise worked tirelessly for 11 years. Eventually, they overturned the conviction and cleared his name but this came 5 years too late for Peter.
